How to Build Your First Animated Pixel Light Show


A beginner-friendly guide to outlining your house, adding a few simple props, connecting a pixel controller, and creating your first animation in xLights.

Animated pixel displays can look complicated from the street, but your first show does not need thousands of lights or dozens of props. A clean house outline, a few snowflakes or arches, and a properly planned controller can already produce an impressive display.

The best beginner strategy: get the house outline working first. Then add props one group at a time.

1. Start With a Simple Display

For a typical two-story house, consider starting with:

  • Lower roofline or first-floor eaves
  • Upper roofline and roof peaks
  • Garage and/or a few window outlines
  • Three small snowflakes
  • Three or four arches or candy canes

That gives xLights enough variety for chases, color washes, twinkles, wipes and music-synchronized effects without making the first installation overwhelming.

The pixel counts and controller-port assignments in the example are illustrations. Measure your own home and calculate your actual pixel counts before ordering.

2. Understand the Four Main Parts

You can think about the entire display as four basic jobs:

Component Job
xLights Creates your house layout and the effects or sequences you want the lights to perform.
Network Connects your computer/show player to the pixel controller.
Pixel Controller Sends the correct data to each string of pixels.
Power Supply Provides the DC power required by the controller and pixels.

3. Choose Your Pixels

For this beginner example, we recommend building around one consistent standard: 12V WS2811 pixels with xConnect connectors. Keeping the same voltage and connector family throughout the first display removes a lot of unnecessary confusion.

Important: voltage matters. Do not connect 5V pixels to a 12V pixel power source. Always confirm the voltage and wiring of the exact equipment you are using.

4. Decide How You Will Mount the House Outline

There are two common approaches for a beginner house outline.

Seasonal / removable mounting

Pixels can be installed into suitable mounting strip or channel that is attached for the season and removed afterward. This is useful when you are still experimenting with pixel spacing and layout.

Permanent house trim

5. Add a Few Beginner Props

Once the house outline is planned, add a small number of repeated props. Snowflakes, arches, wreaths and candy canes are good examples because they add movement to the yard without dramatically increasing the complexity of the display.

A simple first-year combination could be three snowflakes plus four arches or candy canes.

6. Choose a Pixel Controller

The pixel controller is the bridge between xLights and your pixels. xLights tells the controller what each pixel should do; the controller sends those instructions to the physical lights.

For a small build, a compact controller such as a Kulp K4-PB can be a useful starting point. Rather than putting the entire house on one output, divide the display into logical sections.

7. Plan Power and Connections

Your controller will normally connect to the house and props through extension cables. Standardizing on one connector system makes those connections easier to manage.

Never rely on connector shape alone. Before connecting equipment, verify V+, Data and Ground on the exact pixel string, pigtail and controller. Also check the pixel data direction.

Power requirements depend on pixel type, pixel count, brightness, wire size and cable length. Larger or longer installations may require power injection. If you are not comfortable working with AC mains power, have that portion of the installation handled or reviewed by someone qualified.

8. Build Your House in xLights

xLights is free, open-source software for designing and sequencing animated lighting displays. It lets you visually lay out your display and apply effects to individual models or groups of models.

  1. Take a straight-on photo of your house. Try to include the entire display area without cars, ladders or other temporary objects blocking the view.
  2. Add the photo as your xLights background. This gives you a visual reference for positioning your models.
  3. Draw the rooflines. Use logical models such as Lower Roof, Upper Roof Left and Upper Roof Right rather than making the entire house one giant model.
  4. Add the props. Position snowflakes, arches, candy canes and other props approximately where they will be installed.
  5. Create model groups. Examples include All Snowflakes, All Arches, House Outline and All Models.
  6. Assign models to controller outputs. Match your virtual xLights layout to the way the display will actually be wired.

9. Test Everything Before Installation

Bench-test every string of pixels, extension cable and completed prop before it goes onto the roof or into the yard.

At minimum, run:

  • Red
  • Green
  • Blue
  • White

Confirm that every pixel responds correctly and that the data travels in the expected direction. Label both ends of every extension cable while everything is still on the workbench.

A label maker may become one of your favorite light-show tools. “Upper Roof Port 2” is much easier to troubleshoot in December than “that black cable behind the bush.”

10. Create Your First Animation

Do not begin by sequencing a five-minute song. First create a short 20-30 second animation that proves the entire display works.

For example:

  1. Entire house — red
  2. Entire house — green
  3. Roofline — left-to-right chase
  4. Snowflakes — white twinkle
  5. Arches — chase
  6. Entire house — blue
  7. Entire display — white sparkle

Once those effects work on the actual house, move on to a musical sequence.

12. Start Small and Grow Every Year

Your first animated light show does not need 20,000 pixels. A clean house outline and a handful of simple props can already produce color changes, chases, wipes, twinkles, sparkles and synchronized musical effects.

More importantly, that first display teaches you the fundamentals:

Pixels → Power → Controller → Network → xLights → Sequence

Once those concepts make sense, adding larger props, mega trees, matrices and more advanced controllers becomes much easier.
